CNN Summit on Virtual Worlds

Here’s an 8 minute video (in order to fit into YouTube’s 10 minute limit) cut down from the a 50 minute program put out by CNN on virtual worlds. The CNN Future Summit - Virtual Worlds
The panel featured: Trond Aas, CEO, Funcom; Stewart Butterfield, Co-Founder, Flickr; Trip Hawkins, Founder & CEO of Digital Chocolate; Zareh Nalbandian , Managing Director & Co-founder, Animal Logic; Ellen Poon President & Creative Director, Lancet Films; Philip Rosedale, Founder and CEO, Linden Lab; Jimmy Wales, Founder, Wikipedia; Leo Sang-Min Whang, Professor of Psychology, Yonsei University; Buddy Ye, CEO, WangYou Media; Nick Yee, Founder, The Daedalus Project.
The panel explored the impact of virtual worlds on society, and is well worth watching. The YouTube video was edited down by Nick Yee, one of the panellists, who realised it would not be aired inside the US!

The International Herald Tribune is reporting that IBM will launch a new mainframe platform specifically designed for next-generation virtual worlds and 3D virtual environments, designed to improve security, scalability and speed of operation.

IBM and Brazilian game developer Hoplon will use the fast Cell processor (used by the PlayStation 3) to to give virtual world creators much more power and also secure ecommerce systems. The machines will start at hundreds of thousands dollars, something big media companies may be interested in since currently its hard to support thousands of audience members at a single event inside an environment like Second Life.
